However, for South America the effects of El Niño were devastating with both Argentina and Chile suffering. California, Australia and New Zealand all had very good vintages and, although the South African vintage was badly affected by drought, the result was admirable. Where Europe excelled, the New World saw more mixed results. Spain, Germany and Austria also had fantastic years. For Port, 2016 was exceptional and likely a legendary year with all major houses declaring. Italy enjoyed a great vintage, with both Piedmont and Tuscany performing very well. The Rhône and Alsace were both very good, with the Loire and Champagne regions generally suffering the most from devastating April frosts. Sauternes was also very good, which is unusual, as a good year for dry Bordeaux tends not to be such a good year for sweet Sauternes.īurgundy experienced a difficult vintage, but the outcome was phenomenally good, and Beaujolais was also excellent. Bordeaux was excellent and could well be legendary, although more time is perhaps needed to truly tell. Europe tends to be less affected.Īnd in Europe, France enjoyed a wonderful year.
